Jomo Kenyatta, born in 1897, became a towering figure in Kenya's struggle for independence. He emerged from poor beginnings in the Kikuyu tribe to become a significant figure in the nationalist struggle opposing British colonial power. Kenyatta's ardent push for self-government and unity resulted in his detention by British officials. Following his release, Kenyatta continued to mobilize support for independence, eventually succeeding when Kenya obtained independence in 1963. He became Kenya's first president and led the country through its formative years. Kenyatta's administration prioritized nation-building, economic development, and promoting harmony among Kenya's numerous ethnic groupings.
