The vanishing woman

CHAPTER 1 — The Woman Who Vanished

The rain started the way bad decisions often do—quietly.

A soft drizzle tapped against the windshield as Daniel Cole stared at his phone for the fifth time in ten minutes. No new messages. No missed calls. Just the same unread text sitting there like a wound that refused to close.

"I’m outside. Come down."

He exhaled and leaned his head back against the car seat. The estate gate loomed ahead of him—tall, black, unwelcoming. His father’s house always felt less like a home and more like a fortress. Tonight, it felt like a warning.

The gate creaked open slowly.

Daniel drove in.

Inside the house, the air was tense in the way moneyed homes often were—quiet, polished, dangerous. Everything smelled expensive. Leather. Whiskey. Control.

His father, Richard Cole, stood near the bar with his back turned, swirling a glass of bourbon like the night belonged to him.

“You’re late,” Richard said without turning.

“I told you I was picking up Lily,” Daniel replied.

That was enough to make Richard turn around.

“Lily,” he repeated slowly, tasting the name like something bitter. “That girl again.”

Daniel stiffened. “She’s not 'that girl'. She’s my fiancée.”

Richard laughed, but there was no humor in it. “You are infatuated. That’s different.”

“She’s my future.”

Richard took a sip of his drink, eyes sharp. “Your future doesn’t include women who don’t know their place.”

Daniel clenched his jaw. This conversation had happened too many times—just dressed in different words.

“I love her,” Daniel said.

Richard stepped closer. “Love is a luxury. Our family runs on legacy.”

Daniel said nothing. He grabbed his car keys and turned toward the door.

“She’s waiting outside,” he said. “I’m taking her home.”

Richard’s voice dropped, dangerous and calm. “That girl will be the end of you.”

Daniel paused. Looked back.

“No,” he said quietly. “You will be—if you don’t stop trying to control my life.”

For a moment, father and son stared at each other. The silence felt like a loaded gun.

Then Daniel walked out.

Outside, Lily stood near the gate, hugging her jacket around herself, rain dampening her hair. When she saw Daniel, her face lit up in that way that made the world soften around him.

“There you are,” she said. “I thought he’d keep you hostage again.”

Daniel smiled. “He tried.”

She laughed, and for a moment, everything felt normal. Possible.

They drove off into the night, hands intertwined over the center console, unaware that this would be the last time they’d ever sit like this—unafraid.

---

The call came two hours later.

Lily’s phone buzzed on the nightstand. She frowned at the unfamiliar number but answered anyway.

“Hello?”

“Lily,” a man’s voice said. Calm. Polite. Authoritative. “This is Mr. Cole.”

She sat up. “Sir?”

“I need to see you. Urgently.”

Her heart skipped. “Is Daniel okay?”

“He’s fine,” Richard said smoothly. “This is about *you*.”

There was a pause.

“I don’t understand—”

“I’ll send a driver. It’s important. Family matters.”

Something about his tone unsettled her. But Lily had always believed that honesty protected good people.

“I’ll come,” she said.

That was her mistake.

---

The driver dropped her at an unfinished section of the estate—an old guest house swallowed by darkness and trees. The rain had stopped, but the silence was heavier now.

“Sir?” Lily called as she stepped out. “Mr. Cole?”

A shadow moved.

Richard emerged slowly, his coat perfectly pressed, his expression unreadable.

“You wanted to see me?” Lily asked.

“Yes,” he said. “I wanted you to understand something.”

She swallowed. “If this is about Daniel, I—”

“You will never marry my son.”

The words hit her like a slap.

“Sir—”

“You are a liability,” Richard continued. “You don’t belong in our world. You are from a poor background without connections. In short, you are a nobody!”

“I love him,” Lily said, voice trembling. “And he loves me.”

Richard sighed, almost regretful. “That’s unfortunate.”

The next moments happened too fast and too slow all at once.

A struggle. A sharp cry. A hand clamped over her mouth.

Lily’s phone slipped from her hand and skidded across the wet concrete, screen shattering.

Her eyes met Richard’s—wide, terrified, pleading.

“This didn’t have to happen,” he whispered.

Then the night swallowed her scream.

---

From the trees, someone watched.

A young girl, no more than sixteen, frozen in fear. Her breath caught in her throat as she clutched her phone, hands shaking violently.

She hadn’t meant to be there. She had been sent on an errand. A simple one.

Now she was witnessing a murder.

She raised her phone slowly, instinctively, pressing record without even realizing she had done it. The camera captured shadows. Voices. A face she would never forget.

Richard Cole.

Her foot snapped a twig.

Richard turned sharply.

Their eyes met.

Time stopped.

The girl trembled, tears streaming silently down her face.

“I didn’t see anything,” she whispered. “I swear. I won’t say anything.”

Richard stared at her for a long moment. Then he nodded.

“Good,” he said. “For your own sake.”

She ran.

---

By morning, Lily was gone.

Her phone was found smashed beyond recognition. Her apartment was untouched. No note. No goodbye.

Daniel called. And called. And called.

No answer.

By noon, his family stepped in.

“Maybe she ran away,” his mother said gently.

“With another man,” his aunt added.

“She was never serious,” Richard concluded. “I warned you.”

Daniel didn’t believe them.

Not at first.

But weeks passed. Then months.

Emails went unanswered. Her number stayed dead. Her social media went silent.

Eventually, even grief grew tired.

Richard arranged Daniel’s transfer abroad—'a fresh start'. Distance did what lies alone could not.

Daniel left the country believing the woman he loved had vanished by choice.

He never knew she had been erased.

And somewhere, hidden deep beneath years of fear and silence, a video waited.

Patient.

Unforgiving.

Alive.
