In a major move to combat the rising cost of food and hunger across the country, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of grains from Nigeria’s strategic reserve.
The grains, which include maize, millet, sorghum, and garri, will be distributed free of charge to Nigerians, especially in vulnerable and rural communities.
This announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, who confirmed that the grains would be shared through traditional rulers, local governments, and faith-based organizations.
He also added that over 60 trucks of rice donated by the Rice Millers Association of Nigeria are being packaged and will be distributed alongside the grains.
Nigerians have been facing severe food shortages due to inflation, fuel price hikes, insecurity in farming regions, and the fall in the naira’s value. Many families now struggle to afford basic meals.
This intervention is one of several palliatives promised by the government to reduce the burden on citizens. However, some Nigerians are still skeptical about whether these grains will get to the grassroots or be hoarded along the way.
As the distribution begins, citizens are watching closely and hoping the aid reaches those who need it most.
