There’s a certain confidence you carry as a teenager. You think, “Once I turn 18, I’ll be free, rich, and unstoppable.”
Fast forward to adulthood, and you’re standing in your kitchen, staring at a pot of rice you just burnt, wondering why NEPA took light midway and asking yourself deep philosophical questions like: “Is this how I die?”
Let me tell you, nothing prepares you for the first time you price tomato and discover it’s now a luxury item. Or the moment you check your account balance and it says ₦113.50, but you just confidently told your friend you were “on the way” to meet them at an expensive place. On the way to where? Heaven?
Adulting is basically being your own parent. You wake yourself up, feed yourself (or pretend garri and groundnut is a balanced diet), and somehow pretend like you know what you’re doing — when in reality, you're just guessing and praying at the same time.
Let’s not even talk about responsibilities. I once spent 3 days calculating if I should buy data or eat. I chose data… and used it to Google cheap food alternatives. Circle of life.
But despite it all, we laugh, we learn, and we hustle. Because being a broke adult in Naija is a full-time job — and somehow, you still need a side hustle to survive it.
So if you’re out here struggling too, just know you’re not alone. We’re all out here faking confidence, pressing our last ₦200, and whispering, “It is well.”
