Though the journey of getting to be a star can be paved with flashy cars, clapping hands that never seem to stop, and being known the world all over, Zlatan Ibile still has one thing to say to the upcoming musicians: keep some money aside for your mental health. The rapper and Zanku dance creator has opened up and given warning that getting to the peak of one’s music career is one of the main reasons of the emotional problems that are also known to be the cause of the feeling of being overwhelmed even for the strongest ones.
On Thursday, Zlatan humorously yet truthfully addressed his audience via social media. He advised the artistes to allocate part of their budgets to catering for the therapy needs just like they would do it for the marketing and promotions. He said that being famous is like holding a double-edged sword and if one wanted to cycle through fame without hassle, then professional help would be the way to go. Quoting himself, he said that if a person is convinced that their friend or brother is going to be a star, then they should be the first ones to book a slot for a therapist right next to the promo budget.
The remarks he made are a reflection of the scope of discussions that are held in the music sector concerning the emotional burden of the trade. A lot of the people that perform have, in fact, confessed that they have experienced depression, anxiety, and burnout in the time that the industry has been going on inside the music business. Nigerian stars in the past have exposed their struggles which, in turn, have been a major factor in the unrecognized pressures of the spotlight lifestyle.
In 2022, Omah Lay got the public's attention when he disclosed on his social media profile that not only had his depression gotten worse but also the complication with his therapist confounded him further. Similar to Omah, Zlatan can be found making the same point such that fame, though a great thing, can cause people to suffer from mental health issues if proper care is not taken.
One point among Zlatan’s that is tantamount to a call for young artists that are chasing the fame spotlights is: fame is amazing, but therapy might be the only investment that one can count on surviving the whole process.
