Social media is damaging Nigerian children — and the world is acting while Nigeria consults.
Australia banned social media for under-16s in December 2025. France, Indonesia, and 40+ other countries followed. Meanwhile, 54% of Nigerian children aged 8–16 are already exposed to cyber abuse, and Nigerian youth on social media 10+ hours weekly show depression rates 40% higher than average.
Critics raise valid concerns — enforcement difficulty, government overreach, and the argument that poverty, not TikTok, is the real problem. But none of these argue children aren't being harmed. Difficulty is not a reason for inaction.
Nigeria needs a framework that fines platforms not children, uses NIMC for age verification, regulates addictive design, and teaches digital literacy in schools.
The bottom line: we have handed our children's mental health to Silicon Valley algorithms. Nigeria's public consultation is a start — but our children need urgency, not paperwork.
