The Benin Empire began its rise in the 11th century under Oba Eweka I, who established a centralized monarchy after the decline of the Ogiso dynasty. With a strong leadership structure, the empire expanded through warfare, trade, and diplomacy, becoming one of the most organized and powerful kingdoms in West Africa. A major turning point came during the reign of Oba Ewuare the Great, who restructured the capital city, built defensive walls, and introduced administrative and cultural reforms. His leadership marked a golden era in Benin’s history, characterized by urban development, artistry, and expansion. By the 15th century, the empire had developed international trade relations, notably with the Portuguese, exchanging goods like ivory and pepper for firearms and other European products. The creation of the renowned Benin Bronzes during this period further signaled the kingdom’s cultural and artistic advancement. The rise of the Benin Empire reflects a story of strategic governance, cultural pride, and resilience-laying the foundation for its historical and global legacy.
